Many dismiss smokers as irresponsible and often lazy, this derives from an age old stigma, one which may have held some truth at one point in time but now is really just an outdated generalisation. The reason I say it’s outdated with such certainty is because while I can give my own opinions and thoughts on why this reputation is unwarranted, the proof is in the pudding, when you look at the amount of people considered ‘successful’ by society who have admitted to regularly smoking such as billionaire Richard Branson and actors such as Seth Rogen and Brad Pitt. While I’m not saying that there are certainly some lazy stoners out there, I am saying that there is not much of a correlation between the two, every lazy stoner I know was lazy before they started smoking and I still know plenty of lazy people who have never smoked in their life.
I’m not going to give you a step by step guide on being a productive and responsible person whilst also being a smoker, because I acknowledge that everyone is different and therefore an in depth step by step style self-help guide would be somewhat redundant in the grand scheme of things.
You need to find the balance in your life essentially to maintain optimum productivity, you need to ensure that you understand and acknowledge what works for you in terms of getting things done as well as what you enjoy doing. It does somewhat boil down to the work/play balance, for the majority of your life it will be essential for you to finish everything you need to do before moving on to the things you consider leisure and want to do. While for many people these may intertwine, it just doesn’t work if you save the things you don’t really want to do until last, it’s like eating your pudding before your main course, it’s just not as nice. In terms of smoking, it’s true that it can make you a bit lethargic at times, so just make sure if you do end up in that situation you have covered your work beforehand.Obviously this is different for everyone, however, whether you work in an office or you’re a touring musician you will need to balance getting your work done alongside unwinding and relaxing in ways that benefit you, not ways that spill into and consume your life. Using smoking as an incentive to do your work is a good one, especially if you work a stressful job, just make sure you understand the levels to which smoking affects your productivity, if at all.
